There are so many factors that affect body composition whether it be hydration or down to other factors.
These are 10 different factors that can affect body composition, try to keep these as constant as possible while tracking on boditrax:
Hydration.
The body is least hydrated in the early morning as we lose moisture overnight and replenish it during the day. It is therefore recommended to scan at least 3 hours after rising .
Time of day.
It is normal for body weight to vary by as much as 3-4% in a 24 hour period based on the weight of fuel in and waste out. It is recommended that repeat scans are carried out at the same time of day.
Exercise.
Working out causes fluids to move around the body to provide nutrients to the muscles and this can affect the body’s electrical properties and therefore body composition results. It is recommended to scan at least 3 hours after exercise.
Recent Food Intake.
Stomach contents will add to overall weight. After eating a substantial meal it is recommended to wait at least 3 hours before carrying out a scan.
Full bladder.
It is not recommended to scan with a full bladder so users are advised to empty their bladder before scanning.
Diuretic Intake.
As alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, their consumption can cause dehydration. It is advised that consuming alcohol or caffeine in large quantities should be avoided for at least 12 hours before scanning.
Medication.
Different medications can cause both dehydration and fluid retention. Where users are taking medications they should refer to the published side effects and consider the effects when interpreting their results.
Illness.
Some conditions including stomach upsets and diabetes can cause dehydration which will affect body composition results. It is not recommended to scan when ill.
Swelling.
Where swelling (oedema) occurs as a result of injury or other condition this will affect the body’s electrical properties and therefore body composition results.
Menstruation.
Water retention in the premenstrual part of the cycle will affect body composition results.
While keeping these factors in mind, users will be able to accurately track your progress if the user keeps the variables the same or similar while performing a reading.
